Nurturing Little Minds: Instilling a lifelong love for literature

It is never too soon to start reading to your baby or toddler. Reading is a skill that is essential for your children in school and life. Early reading has a positive impact on babies and toddlers. Hearing books read aloud has benefits long before the first day of kindergarten. When we read to very young children, they experience the cadence of reading and are introduced to the sounds of literature. When Babies hear words read, it expands their rapidly growing language skills and vocabulary. Book language differs from conversation, and the reading voice differs from a speaking voice. Don’t be afraid to ham it up when reading to your young children! They love funny voices.

A few tips on reading to babies and toddlers:

β˜… Reading is a time for snuggling, and many babies like to curl up and be read to. Some may want to wiggle or crawl around, but they still benefit from hearing you read.

β˜… Try and read together daily. Five minutes daily is enough to start creating a habit.

β˜… Talk and wonder together about what you read and see in the illustrations. “I wonder why this is happening?” “I wonder what will happen next?” “Why is that bear wearing a hat?”

β˜… Let your child take the lead. They may want to spend more time on one page or picture. They may want to read the same book over and over. The goal is to have them interested in being with the book; you don’t have to finish it.

β˜… Create a low shelf of books that babies can explore on their own. Board books and other books can take a lot of use. Yes, they will explore them with their mouths. That’s ok. This part of being in the sensory-motor stage of development will be the topic of an upcoming blog.

β˜… Put a book or books in their car seat for them to look at while you are driving around.

β˜… Point out PRINT in the world as you drive and walk aroundβ€”street signs, store signs, labels, etc.

β˜… When it feels like a lot, remember there will be a time when this super cuddly person tells you, “It’s ok; I want to read this to myself.”
